Held on 1-2 November the Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican tradition celebrating the lives of the deceased. Graves are visited by families across the country, a place not just to sit and remember but to eat and celebrate, bringing the favourite foods or other items enjoyed by loved ones lost. La Catrina has become the referential image of Death in Mexico embodying Day of the Dead celebrations throughout the country. Her representations can vary and she is often wearing a hat and elegantly dressed. In Australia, Mexican ‘sugar skulls’ also stemming from day of the dead traditions can be found in print, design and on tattooed bodies (everywhere) embracing the beauty of Mexican design and culture.
