LARGE HUICHOL SHAMAN BEADED SUGAR SKULLSKU: SSHL.
This exquisite ceramic skull is intricately beaded with peyote, deer and corn (maize) motifs, in psychedelic colours by Indigenous Huichol artist. The deer, maize, and peyote are the most significant motifs together forming a unity in Huichol religious thought and practice. The maize is represented by the toto flower and is the key food source. The peyote is the symbol representing the continuity and unity of life, and acquisition of shamanic powers, and is considered a gift from the gods to the people to enlighten their lives and bring them into the mystical realm. The Deer is the spirit guide Kauyumari, who leads the shamans on their visionary pathways and teaches them how to gain their special knowledge often appearing in male and female pairs, symbolizing the unity between men and women on their spiritual journey.
These motifs have spiritual significance, influenced by visions that occur in peyote rituals undertaken by Huichol shamans. The ceramic skull is covered in a pine resin and beeswax layer which acts as an adhesive, onto which each bead is painstakingly placed by hand using a needle with this piece including tens of thousands of beads. A super gift for the skull collector!
