Held on 1-2 November the Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican tradition celebrating the lives of the deceased. Graves are visited by families across the country, a place not just to sit and remember but to eat and celebrate, bringing the favourite foods or other items enjoyed by loved ones lost. Sugar skulls are a traditional candy used in Day of the Dead celebrations, as a funny treat given to the receiver with their name on it. Decorated with metallic paper, sequins and coloured sugar paste, some are so beautiful they become short lived artistic manifestations of the intimate relationship Mexicans have with death and their dead. Throughout the globe modern ‘sugar skulls’ can found represented in print, design and on tattooed bodies (everywhere) embracing the beauty of Mexican design and culture.
